The Temple Ohav Shalom Center for Early Learning (TOSCEL) is an early childhood program that is guided by Jewish/humanist values and inspired by the philosophy of Reggio Emilia schools. We are proud of our commitment to supporting and welcoming families into our community no matter their background or their relationship to Judaism.
Children learn and grow through play. With this belief to guide us, we fill each day with activities that foster cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth. Our programs are built upon one another through a developmental approach that focuses on the whole child. Beginning with our My Grown-up and Me (0-24 months) program and continuing through the Afternoon Explorers (3.5 years old-Kindergarten) program, each day includes creative play, small and large group activities, art exploration, and much, much more. At TOSCEL, children and families find a warm, nurturing environment where a love of learning is established and nurtured. Age and developmentally appropriate programs, creative and caring staff, ideal teacher-to-child ratios, and a home-like, comfortable facility ensure a positive, first formal education experience.

Our Mission & Vision
Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, and guided by Jewish values, Temple Ohav Shalom Center for Early Learning (TOSCEL) creates a welcoming and inclusive community that celebrates the uniqueness of all families and develops a life-long love of learning.
Our early childhood program reflects the influence of Jewish values and teachings, the educational philosophy underlying the Reggio Emilia approach, and the standards and guidelines set forth by NAEYC, a professional early childhood organization. We are a school guided by Jewish values, inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, and a community that celebrates the diversity of our families.
Our vision is to provide the children an environment that is rich and engaging, and a curriculum that encourages children to question, investigate, and develop the skills necessary for future success.

Our History
|
In August 2011, our Center was selected as one of three Jewish early childhood programs in the greater Pittsburgh area to participate in the Pittsburgh JECEI* program, a comprehensive program designed to bring into our classrooms the acclaimed early childhood philosophy of Reggio Emilia as viewed through the lens of Jewish values and teachings. Our goal is to provide the children an environment that is rich and engaging. A curriculum builds upon their interests and encourages them to question, investigate, and develop the skills necessary for future success. We are a school guided by Jewish values, inspired by Reggio Emilia, and a community that celebrates the diversity of our families.
In 2018 the Center for Early Learning's Leadership Committee began to rethink the values that guide our school. They came up with three values that define the work that the director, educators, and families do, as well as eight Hebrew words that embody what we are striving to teach the children. * The Pittsburgh Jewish Early Childhood Education Initiative (JECEI) is a program supported by the Centennial Fund for the Jewish Future, an endowment within the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh Foundation and the Agency for Jewish Learning. |
